Why I Started Nexus BioStrategy

Over the years in my career, I have been fortunate to work at the intersection of science, agriculture, and innovation.

I grew up on a farm and that early experience shaped how I think about agriculture. It taught me that innovation only matters when it can work reliable in the field and creat real values for farmers.

Years later, I became a scientist. Along the way, I had the opportunity to work on a wide range of technologies, from plant biotechnology and gene editing to RNA-, peptides-, microbe-based solutions, and translational research.

Like many scientists, I started my career believing that great science would naturally lead to great products.

Over time, I found myself wrong, at least not completely right.

Some of the most promising technologies never reach growers.

Others demonstrate strong results in the laboratory but struggle in the field.

Still others face challenges in scalable manufacturing, regulation, commercialization, or adoption.

The longer I worked in the industry, the clearer one lesson became:

Innovation is rarely the bottleneck. Translation is.

I’ve learned this not just by observing from the outside, but by living it.

Relationships often move projects forward faster than technologies.

Listening can be more valuable than presenting.

Most importantly, growers ultimately decide whether an innovation succeeds. A technology only creates value when it solves a real problem in the field.

Moving an idea from discovery to real-world impact requires understanding the entire system: science, formulation, manufacturing, regulation, field performance, commercial strategy, and farmer adoption.

Weakness in any one of them can limit the success of an otherwise promising technology.

This realization has shaped much of my thinking in recent years. It also led me to launch Nexus BioStrategy.

Why Nexus BioStrategy?

The name was chosen intentionally.

A nexus is a connection point, a place where different paths meet.

In ag-biotech, innovation often sits at the intersection of multiple disciplines and stakeholders.

Scientists, entrepreneurs, investors, regulators, developers, commercial teams, and growers all bring different perspectives to the same challenge.

Yet these groups do not always speak the same language.

Scientists focus on technical possibilities.

Business leaders focus on markets and adoption.

Investors focus on risk and opportunity.

Regulators focus on safety and compliance.

Farmers focus on reliability, simplicity, and value.

Real innovation happens when these perspectives come together.

Nexus BioStrategy was created to help bridge those gaps.

What We Do

Nexus BioStrategy is more than just me. It is a network of experts, each bringing deep experience at different points across the innovation-to-impact journey.

At its core, it helps organizations connect scientific innovation with strategy, partnerships, regulatory insight and execution in ag-biotech.

The work spans technology assessment, innovation strategy, competitive intelligence, translational development planning, and partnership building.

But service descriptions only tell part of the story. The deeper mission is helping good science find a path to meaningful impact.

A New Chapter

Starting Nexus BioStrategy is both exciting and humbling. Like many entrepreneurs, I don’t have all the answers.

What I do have is a belief that agriculture needs more people who can connect disciplines, build partnerships, and help bridge the gap between innovation and implementation.

I also have a deep appreciation for the mentors, colleagues, collaborators, and friends who have shaped my thinking and encouraged me to take this step.

Many of you have challenged my assumptions, opened doors I didn’t know existed, and modeled what it looks like to lead with both scientific integrity and strategic clarity.

I hope to pay that forward through this work.

From time to time, I will also share lessons from building Nexus BioStrategy and reflections from conversations across the ag-biotech ecosystem.

Because at the end of the day, this journey is not just about a boutique consulting firm.

It is also about connecting people, ideas, and possibilities, and helping good ideas become real-world solutions.
